KW automotive develops coilover suspensions for BMW xDrive models

The range of BMW vehicle models with all-wheel drive consistently grows. BMW offers the “xDrive all-wheel drive concept” for more than 60 models, from the 1-series over 5-series up to BMW X6. For the latest all-wheel-drive version of the BMW 3-series Sedan (F30), we now have the KW coilover kits Variant 1, Variant 2 and Variant 3+ available. The stainless KW coilovers allow a continuous lowering of up to 60 mm. While the KW coilover suspension Variant 1 has a factory-set damping, the Variant 2 allows adjusting the KW dampers in rebound damping with 16 clicks. The KW coilover kit Variant 3+ is a performance tool for the road. It can be adjusted separately in rebound and compression damping, similar to suspensions for motorsport. From mid-September 2013 on, the three KW coilovers will also be available for the BMW 3-series station wagon with xDrive.

The continuous lowering of the KW coilover suspensions for BMW F30 models occurs directly at the stainless steel strut via the dirt-resistant KW trapezoid thread. At the front, the xDrive versions of the BMW 3-series can be lowered within the German TÃœV tested adjustment range by 25 to 55 mm. On the rear axle, the adjustment of the desired vehicle height has to be made at the rear-axle height adjustment, within the TÃœV approved range of 35 to 60 mm. “The days when lowering by a coilover kit meant being hard and uncomfortable, never applied to our developments,” said KW Product Manager Johannes Wacker. Already in its basic setup, the KW coilovers increase the known steering precision and tracking stability of the current BMW 3-series models with xDrive. While the KW coilover suspension Variant 1 has a factory-set damper adjustment, Variant 2 and Variant 3+ can be adjusted individually in their damping characteristics within just a few minutes.

Advantage: Adjustable KW damping technology

“With the KW coilovers Variant 2 and Variant 3+ with additional damper adjustment, BMW drivers have an accessory product to perfectly set their 3-series to their individual driving demand,” said Johannes Wacker from KW. If for example someone changes the wheel- / tire combinations approved by BMW to larger wheels, this can be considered via the adjustable rebound damping. With an integrated rebound damping adjustment with 16 precise clicks, the KW coilovers Variant 2 also allow to significantly affect the handling and comfort of the BMW 3-series xDrive. Even more individual setup options are offered by the KW coilovers Variant 3+. “Here we talking about racing technology for the street”, Johannes Wacker describes the adjustment possibilities of KW coilovers Variant 3+. “The separate damping force adjustment in compression and rebound is kind of like our racing damper technology.” For example, all BMW Z4 GT3 race cars are homologated with racing suspensions from the KW Competition program and also the exclusive automobile manufacturers BMW Alpina works closely with KW automotive in selected special models, just like the BMW M GmbH. In addition to handling and comfort, the Variant 3+ can take influence on potential rolling motions of the F30 body, by the separately adjustable compression damping with twelve clicks. Therefore, the BMW xDrive models equipped with a KW coilover Variant 3+ can be driven by sporty drivers even more direct and safe in the threshold range.
